The extended Hefferon family has an annual family reunion just outside of Hammonton, New Jersey. As it happens, I was the first person in my family to actually visit the spectacle and to meet handfuls of second and third cousins I never even knew existed.
I was particularly happy that I went as my grandfather, Richard Hefferon, became very ill and subsequently died of leukemia just a few months after this event.
Although I spoke with him on the phone a few times between this event and his death, this was the last time that I saw him alive.
