This was the first of a few times that Tisa and I visited Kaikoura. The town sits just a few hours south of the northern tip of the South Island along the east coast. It's mostly famous for it's whale watching, though Tisa and I didn't get the chance to go due to some bad weather.
Sean and I eventually got to take a helicopter trip out of here for some whale watching a few months later.
If you have seen the movie "The Whale Rider", although I don't believe it's supposed to be set in Kaikoura, the area looks exactly like the movie did.
